La
République

Semi-Presidential Republic · Updated October 2026

The Fifth Republic was built in 1958 for Charles de Gaulle: a president with the powers of an elected monarch and a parliament kept on a short leash. That design works brilliantly when the president controls the National Assembly — and badly when he doesn't. Since the 2024 snap election left a parliament split into three hostile blocs, power has drained from the Élysée to the parties that can bring a government down, while the permanent state — the grands corps, Bercy and the prefects — keeps the country running.
