Parliamentary Republic · Updated October 2026

Italy had 68 governments in its first 76 years as a republic — so the system's genius was always in what sits around the government: a powerful president, independent judges, the Bank of Italy, Brussels, the Church, family dynasties and, in parts of the south, organised crime. Giorgia Meloni has broken the pattern by surviving: in September 2026 hers became the longest-lasting government in the republic's history. Her next move — a new electoral law with a majority bonus — is designed to make that stability permanent.
