Constitutional Monarchy · Updated October 2026

The UK's constitution is unwritten, so its real shock absorbers are convention and precedent rather than a single document. Those conventions were tested hard in 2026: a mid-term Labour leadership change handed the premiership to Andy Burnham without a general election, the devolved governments in Scotland and Wales fractured into minority administrations, and Reform UK displaced the Conservatives as the insurgent force in the polls. Underneath the elected tiers sits a second, informal architecture — the City of London's lobbying reach, a press empire that still makes and breaks Home Secretaries, and an Eton-and-Oxbridge network that still supplies most judges and permanent secretaries. The formal chart describes who is accountable to whom; it only partly describes who moves policy.
